Knitting Workshop
Cast on and knit as per Spun Out # 18, increasing as instructed until you have
40 sts on the needle. Then decrease as instructed,
EXCEPT: Gail knits the first stitch and decreases over the next 2 stitches to keep selvage
edge nicer. At this point you'll have a lovely square washcloth even if you don't go any further with it (but I hope you will).
Trapezoid # 1 You should now have 1 stitch on your needle. Do not turn your work, just
work down the left side of your square. Pick up and knit for first side as per Spun Out # 18 (3 sts for every 2 on the selvage)
I came up with 29, including 1 that sort of straddles the corner. Elizabeth didn't specifically address the last stitch of
each row (in this part of the pattern), but I want you to increase at the beginning of each row as directed, and slip the
last st purlwise as directed. Work up to about 35 sts, or 3 ridges. Place these 35 stitches on waste yarn, or a stitch holder
Trapezoids 2 & 3 are the same: Pick up 1 st for each ridge along the diagonal selvage
edge (in thiscase 3)Keep an eye on these stitches as we'll be bringing them into work one at a time.
Pick up and knit for next side as per Spun Out # 18 (3 sts for every 2 on the selvage)
I came up with 29. (I decided to keep the 3rd selvage strand to the back of my work. This would not be avisible issue on a
lacy shawl)
Row 1: K1, M1, K29, turn, leaving 2 behind
Row 2: K30, slip last st p-wise (31)
Row 3: K1, M1, K31, turn, leaving 1 behind (33)Row 4: K32, slip last st p-wise (33)
Row 5: K1, M1, K33, turn (all stitches worked) (35)
Row 6: K35 Trapezoid # 4: Pick up 1 st for each ridge along the diagonal selvage edge
(in this case 3)Keep an eye on these stitches as we'll be bringing them into work one at a time. Pick up
and knit for next side as per Spun Out # 18 (3 sts for every 2 on the selvage) I came up with 29.Pick up 1 more stitch from
the diagonal selvage of trapezoid # 1,turn.
Row 1: K31, turn, leaving 2 behind
Row 2: K31 and pick up 1 more stitch in the diagonal selvage (32)
Row 3: K33, turn, leaving 1 behind
Row 4: K33 and pick up 1 stitch in the selvage (34)
Row 5: K35, turn (all 3 stitches worked)
Row 6: K35 and stop All 4 trapezoids are now complete and we'll be adding a nice
little border. I placed all stitches on a circular needle for holding.
Lace Edge Sequence:
Row 1: K1, yo, k2tog, yo, k1 (5)
Row 2: K4, K2tog (5)
Row 3: K2, yo, k2tog, yo, k1 (6)
Row 4: K 5, K2tog (6)
Row 5: K3, yo, k2tog, yo, k1 (7)
Row 6: K6, K2tog (7)
Row 7: K4, yo, k2tog, yo, k1
Row 8: cast off 4, k2, K2tog(4)
Directions for knitting the Lace border You will be attaching the lace border as
you knit around the cloth. On the even rows where it says to K2 tog, you will be knitting 1 from your border stitches
and 1 from the stitches around the cloth. You'll cast on 4 stitches to the left needle in order to begin the border.
Work the pattern for the eight rows attaching to the cloth only on the even rows.Repeat the eight rows until you are ready
to work the corner. At the corners you will need to work one repeat of the eight rows without moving. Just keep
picking up stitches from the cloth itself (not off your left hand needle) and stay in one place until the 8 rows are completed.
Then move onto knitting the next side. Work a corner to end and bind off all stitches after row 8. Attach to the beginning
border, weave in ends and enjoy your beautiful cloth.
