Norwegian Mittens

Materials:

Three ounces each of two strongly contrasting colors of worsted weight wool

Size 6 to 8 double points , or 12” circular needle, or 29” if you prefer the Magic Loop method

Yarn needle for weaving in ends

With color A cast on 36 sts and join without twisting

Base of mitten rows:

1 and 3: Knit

2 and 4: Purl

Join Color B and begin working Band rows

Rows 1, 2, and 3: K 3 A, K3 B

Rows 4, 5, and 6: Knit 3 B, K3A

Rows 7, 8, and 9: repeat rounds 1-3

Row 10: Knit 1 round with A

Row 11: Purl 1 round with A

Row 12: still with A, *K7, K2 tog around”

Rows 13,14, and 15: Knit with A (be sure to carry color B up the back of your work by twisting the yarn around A when needed)

Row 16: with A, knit around increasing 4 sts evenly, K7, inc in next stitch

Row 17: Purl 1 round

Mitten Body rows:

1. 4A, 1B, 4A, 4B, 1A, 4B repeat around

2 .3A, 3B, Repeat around

3. 2A, 5B,2A, 2B, 5A, 2B repeat around

4. 1A, 3B, 1A, 3B, 1A, 1B,3A,1B,3A,1B

5. 3B,1A,1B,1A,3B,3A,1B,1A,1B,3A

6. 1A,3B,1A,3B,1A,1B,3A,1B,3A,1B

7. 2A,5B,2A,2B,5A,2B

8. 3A,3B,

9. 4A,1B,4A,4B,1A,4B

10. 4B,1A,4B,4A,1B,4A  repeat round, Turn and now work back and forth

11. Purl 3A, 3B across

12. 2B,5A,2B,2A,5B,2A

13. 1A, Purl 3B, 1A, 3B, 1A, 1B, 3A, 1B, 3A, 1B

14. 3A,1B,1A,1B,3A,3B,1A,1B,1A,3B

15. Purl 1A. 3B, 1A, 3B, 1A, 1B, 3A, 1B, 3A, 1B,

16. 2B.5A.2B.2A.5B.2A around, then join and work in the round again

17. 3B,3A

18. 4B,1A,4B,4A,1B,4A

 Repeat rows 1 -9.  .Knit 1 row A and Purl 1 row with A

Decrease rows:

1. With B: K7, K 2 tog around

2. With B: Knit

3. With A: K6, K2 tog around

4. With A : Knit

Repeat the decreases changing colors after every two rows until you have done just K2 around. (example, next row would be K5, K2 tog )  Break off yarn and weave through stitches. Fasten off and weave in all ends.

Thumb:

Pick up and knit 16-18 sts around thumb hole opening and knit for 2 1/2".  Knit 1A, 1B if desired for striped thumb.

Finish Mitten thumb by working K2 tog until 4 sts remain. Break yarn and weave through remain stitches. Pull up tightly and fasten off. Bring yarn to inside and weave in all ends.

Complete second mitten.
